Into the Sacred Hidden Valleys of the Himalayas of Manaslu Tsum Valley

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a perfect way of celebrating the natural beauty of enchanting valleys which is hidden in between the wilderness of the mountain. The trek gives you the opportunity to visit a remote region that is visited by a few trekkers each year. This long and adventurous trek takes you to the peaceful and unspoiled Manaslu region which is a new place to explore with little impact from tourism. It adds the charms with its traditional Buddhist cum Tibetan culture and lifestyle untouched by modernity where the route is still fewer trekkers visiting off-the-beaten paths. This is a demanding trek and a high level of fitness is required to fully enjoy the adventure.

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is an astonishing journey that takes you through the beautiful mountain Mt Manaslu 8163 meters from sea level. You will enjoy the best that remote tea house trekking has to offer during the time of trekking. The region is comparatively less explored meaning the natural magnificence is still preserved along with the rich culture and traditions which are highly influenced by Buddhism practice. This is the most adventurous trek in the Himalayan region which offers a lifetime trekking experience. The region is untamed and less explored in comparison to other trekking regions with less trodden paths.

Tsum Valley Culture and Scenery

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a rare gem among Himalayan adventures, combining natural splendor, cultural immersion, and spiritual tranquility. Nestled in the northern Gorkha region of Nepal, this trek takes you through the mystical Tsum Valley, a region that remained closed to outsiders until 2008. Known as the “Hidden Valley of Happiness,” Tsum is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, and timeless traditions.

Beginning from the subtropical lowlands of Machhakhola Khola, the trail gradually ascends through dense forests, terraced fields, and remote mountain villages. As you enter the Tsum Valley, the landscape transforms dramatically—expansive alpine meadows, cascading waterfalls, and awe-inspiring views of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and Shringi Himal surround you. This off-the-beaten-path route offers a serene alternative to the more commercialized treks in Nepal.

One of the highlights of the trek is visiting the Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa, two ancient monasteries perched in the upper reaches of the valley, where you can witness Tibetan monks and nuns preserving centuries-old spiritual practices. The region is also home to unique festivals, sacred caves believed to be used by Guru Milarepa, and a strong sense of untouched Himalayan culture.

After exploring the Tsum Valley, the route rejoins the Manaslu Circuit, leading you toward the dramatic Larkya La Pass (5,160m)—one of the most spectacular high mountain passes in Nepal. This section of the trek presents both a physical challenge and an unforgettable reward, with panoramic views stretching across the Manaslu Massif and beyond.

Ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, cultural depth, and raw Himalayan beauty, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a journey into the spiritual heart of Nepal that few have experienced.

Where the Journey Begins

The trek usually begins from Soti Khola, a small village accessible by a scenic drive from Kathmandu. From here, the trail winds through dense forests, suspension bridges, waterfalls, and rice terraces. At first, you follow the classic Manaslu Circuit, but then you branch off into the magical Tsum Valley—where things take a spiritual turn.

The Heart of the Hidden Valley

As you enter Tsum, you immediately feel the change—not just in the landscape, but in the energy. Stone chortens (Buddhist shrines), mani walls, and fluttering prayer flags welcome you to a region steeped in Tibetan Buddhism. You’ll pass ancient monasteries like Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa, where monks and nuns live and practice in harmony with nature and tradition.

Locals speak a dialect closer to Tibetan than Nepali, and the valley still operates on barter systems in some areas. Here, life moves at its own pace. Don’t be surprised if a friendly local invites you into their home for a butter tea or a simple meal of dal bhat.

Unrivaled Mountain Views and Sacred Sites

Surrounded by the majestic Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and Manaslu ranges, the trek constantly rewards you with breathtaking views. But this is not just a trek for mountain lovers—it’s also a spiritual pilgrimage. You’ll visit sacred caves where yogis once meditated, and walk paths lined with centuries-old mani stones carved with Buddhist prayers.

The region is also dotted with gompas (monasteries) that pulse with spiritual energy. These aren’t tourist spots—they’re living centers of worship and tradition. Being welcomed into a chanting ceremony or simply observing the monks go about their day is a humbling experience.

Merging with the Manaslu Circuit

After exploring the wonders of the Tsum Valley, the trail rejoins the Manaslu Circuit, offering trekkers the chance to take on the challenging yet rewarding Larkya La Pass (5,160m). It’s a high point—literally and figuratively—offering panoramic views that seem to stretch into eternity.

Crossing the pass is tough, but it’s also one of the most dramatic and beautiful alpine experiences Nepal has to offer.

Why Choose the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek?

If you’ve already done Everest or Annapurna, or you’re just looking for something off the beaten path, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is the answer. It combines the best of remote trekking: stunning nature, profound culture, genuine encounters, and a sense of solitude that’s increasingly rare on Himalayan trails.

Permits are required, and you’ll need to go with a licensed guide or agency (since it’s still a restricted area), but that just adds to the sense of exclusivity and adventure.

Final Thoughts

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek isn’t just a hike—it’s a journey through living history and spirituality, framed by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. It’s challenging, yes—but it’s also deeply rewarding.

If you’re ready to step into a world where the modern pace fades away and ancient traditions thrive, pack your boots, your curiosity, and your respect—and set off toward the hidden valley of Tsum.

If you are looking for a fulfilling and exciting trekking experience in the Himalayas, I highly recommend securing the services of Megh Gurung and Kingdom Treks.

I have twice joined teams that Megh guided to Poon Hill in the Annapurna Range, and both times I was amazed by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains, and by Megh’s outstanding service and attention to detail. An extra benefit is his wit, humor, and warm personality. Megh leadership made both treks memorable, fun, and truly unforgettable. You can’t go wrong choosing Kingdom Treks.

Great trip! Megh and Sammy took care of everything. From food, to logistics, to accommodation. Couldn’t have been better.

Looking back, the entire trip was amazing but also challenging because of the altitudes and climbing involved. We all did make it.

Everything was taken care of for us in terms of arrangements and airport transfers. Our guide Megh met us at the airport in Kathmandu, arranged our lodging, meals, flights to and from Lukla, shopping for gear extras in town. All our lodging on the trips was also reserved for us. Meals were all served in the lodges. Megh was on the trek with us along with porters who took our gear. We carried day packs.
You should plan 3 weeks minimum for this trip and it will require at least 2 days acclimatization. If I remember correctly, as we got higher, we may have as much as 9 days above 14,000 ft and with that, peaks still rose around us another 4-5 thousand feet if not more. You also should to be in condition for this trek. I also had mild altitude sickness at base camp but did not need intervention. So it is recommended that you learn as much as possible about how to prepare for a trek like this. But the rewards may be well worth it, as some of our photos may illustrate.Consider adding more days for touring in Kathmandu or even for a visit to India on the way home like we did (also arranged by Megh)

Megh is a great guide, reliable and understanding. He was very helpful to my friend Havva and me during the Annapurna Base Camp trek. He is also fun and interesting. If you travel with Megh, you will be satisfied.

Megh and their team delivered a perfectly organized, culturally immersive, and awe-inspiring journey that exceeded all expectations. As someone new to high-altitude trekking, I felt reassured by their focus on safety and flexibility gave me confidence throughout the journey. Megh was phenomenal—knowledgeable, warm, and always ready with fascinating insights about Nepalese culture and the landscapes we explored. Megh’s team, including the hardworking porters, went above and beyond, ensuring we had comfortable teahouse accommodations with hearty meals and jaw-dropping mountain views. Highly Recommend!

As a Canadian female, I’ve trekked with Megh on two trips to Nepal. When we met the first time, I came with a trekking group, we instantly clicked and I now call him “my Nepali dad”. Which he embodies for everyone–he is kind, honest, genuine, and of course, a pro at leading any kind of trek (and making it fun). I went back again a few years later by myself and Megh went above and beyond–picked me up from the airport and helped me navigate busy Kathmandu and Mt. Everest base camp as a solo female. He’s become a lifelong friend of over a decade now, we still keep in touch! If you want a professional who’s been in the game for many years, and someone you can genuinely trust, trek with Megh!

Mustafa E

Wonderful Country and fantastic people.. You can trust Meg and his team with your life literally… I made also friends for life and will do the same journey again soon.. Many thanks Mero Sathi..

Agnes Bonne

Megh and his team were amazing!
What a great experience to climb in the Himalayas. Half way of the Mont Everest! Never though I could do it but with their wisdom, encouraging words along the way and God, I made it!
Hallelujah the Himalayas … there is a God and Megh with his team. I really suggest anyone to go even if you don’t go that high.. just tell Megh what you can and want to do and he will personalize your trip. A must do without any hesitation.

I Enjoyed having Megh Gurung as a Guide

Megh Gurung was an excellent guide and was easy to work with on my group trek to Everest Base Camp. I recommend him to anyone interested in a guided trek in Nepal. If you are trying to decide whether or not to use a guide while trekking, my recommendation is to do so as they add a lot to the experience.
